This yarn spoke to me:
"Knit me".
"But there's not much yardage".
"Knit me".
"But it's the Spring issue and you're wool".
"Knit me".

The yarn always wins. The roving was some gorgeous superwash merino Shannon Okey dishwasher dyed and gifted to me. I did not have to be cajoled into spinning it.

For the hat I ended up using a tiny amount of yarn and a stitch pattern from a Japanese stitch dictionary.

The name, that's from a conversation too, burned in my brain from a tv commercial and inspired by the dishwasher dyeing method. See if you're old enough to remember:

"You're soaking in it."
"Dishwashing liquid?!!"
"Don't worry, it's Pal***ive"

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Circumference: 20 inches

MATERIALS

Yarn: Handspun; similar to a heavy worsted weight, 1.25 ounces, approx 60 yards

1 set US #9/5.5 mm double-point needles
16-inch US #9/5.5 mm circular needle
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle

GAUGE/WPI

14.5 sts/20 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
12 WPI

DIRECTIONS

Using circular needle, CO 80 sts. Place marker and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.

Work 19 rows of Lace Pattern, following Chart 1. Chart 1 will be repeated 16 times on each round.

NOTE: For both Chart 1 and Chart 2, even-numbered rounds are not charted; on these rounds, k all sts.

K 1 round.

Decrease to shape top of hat, following Chart 2. Chart 2 will be repeated 8 times each round. Switch to double-point needles when necessary.

When Round 17 of Chart 2 has been worked, 8 sts rem. Break yarn and draw through rem sts.

FINISHING

Weave in ends.
Block to open lace.
